Case Study 1
PRJ21-0077 - Burham HV PMS (High Voltage Power Management System)

Southern Water site at Burham where JV Controls provided Rockwell Automation and Beijer Electric software for a ControlLogix and Beijer X2Pro on behalf of Saftronics

What were the project requirements?

JV Controls were asked to develop bespoke software for a High Voltage Power Monitoring System. This included a PLC and HMI, contained in a low voltage panel, controlling two high voltage switch gear panels which were rated up to 11kV, as well as a diesel generator capable of up to 2000 kW. JV Controls were then requested to commission the system in conjunction with the panel installers and the generator manufacturers on the end user’s site.

What software and hardware did we use?

  • Studio5000 on a Rockwell 1756-L71 ControlLogix.
  • Prosoft Configuration Builder on a Prosoft MVI56E Modbus Master Module – Prosoft Modbus Card.
  • Prosoft Configuration Builder on a Prosoft MNETR Modbus Master Module – Prosoft Modbus Card.
  • iX Developer 2.4 SP5 on a Beijer x2Pro 15 – Beijer 15” HMI.
Although critical I/O signals were provided on hardwired signals, a number of additional signals were made available via modbus. Switchgear 1 and Switchgear 2 each had their own Modbus RTU network, while the Generator and its associated control panel utilised a Modbus TCP/IP connection.

Although the entire network could not be at once due to availability of the intelligent equipment used for testing, JV Controls acquired one of each and was able to set these up on the bench and test each network node address and device type prior to site.

The LV panel was supplied and installed by others, as was the HV Switchgear. All electrical and mechanical commissioning were carried out by others.

How did it go?

This was the first High Voltage Switchgear system that JV Controls had carried out but was a brilliant addition to our portfolio.
Considerable time was spent with the client who helped detail each element of this system and helped us at JV Controls translate the unique requirements into our design documentation and eventually the finished product.

This continued exchange of knowledge provided JV Controls with the insight to develop bespoke simulation software to test the system through all possible parameters and ensure a smooth site acceptance test. Many aspects of the project grew and changed over the course of the project but we at JV Controls grew and changed with it, ensuring the project finished as intended when commissioned.
